“You have to have about a 30-40 percent utilization rate based on a 24-hour day for the cars to pay for themselves,” said Lohide. “We’ve never hit that.”
The Winona State University car rental program offered to students, faculty and staff may not be available next fall.
Kurt Lohide, vice president for finance and administrative services at WSU, said the Zipcar program on campus is struggling with the amount of student use required for the program to be sustainable--an average of 8 to 10 hours a day.

After 23 years, Rochelle Jansen’s search led her to a compost bin in a small learning community in Minnesota City, Minn., and she couldn’t feel more at home.
As of September, Riverway Learning Community has had an extra instructor on campus, of the green variety. The newcomer to the Minnesota City school, Jansen, doesn’t teach math or English. Her brand of lesson plans and quizzes involve a more natural technique.
