The nearly-silent sound of a single student typing on his laptop almost echoed throughout the deserted Smaug lounge in the lower level of Kryzsko Commons on the Winona State University campus Dec. 6.
AJ Schuler, assistant retail manager for Chartwells, worked quietly with a second Chartwells' employee within the security gates blocking the two entrances to Kafe Kryzsko, the retail store filled with snacks, beverages and miscellaneous drug store items available for purchase from students and staff at the university. Just days away from the students' return, employees readied for their always-hungry and always-thristy customers.
"We really have to make sure we have everything on hand," said Schuler as the shelves continued to be filled by his fellow employee.
Chartwells tries to completely empty the store before students leave on winter break, allowing for new and improved products to be brought in for the new semester. Kafe Kryzsko is heavily cleaned during this month-long break and stocks are reshelved with popular items once again.
Schuler said Chartwells listens to all requests by students and faculty, including adding throwback treats like Fun Dip, Push Pops and Slushees. Unfortunately, all requests can't be met.
"We accomodate as much as we can," he said. "Sometimes the students get frustrated once in a while when we can't get certain beverages because of our Pepsi contract or because of regional differences."
Oftentimes, students from other states request items that cannot be purchased by the university due to delivery discrepancies or product availability in the area.
"We do our best and are always looking for ways to improve what we have to offer students," Schuler said.
Requests can be made at the Chartwells' office on the WSU campus or on their Facebook group page.
