Wal-Mart is known as predatory pricing. Wal-Mart will go into a town, charge below cost until their competition is gone, and then raise prices. The higher Wal-Mart’s market share, the higher its prices. A good example is Austin, MN; they had some of the best quality meat (no hormones or antibiotics) at Cashwise. Wal-Mart opened its doors right across the street from Cash-Wise and not too long after Cashwise was gone. This comparison reminds me of the book “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” in the fact that the U.S. supports cruelty to animals (hormones and antibiotics), the making of cheap food, and in mass quantities. It would be nice to have quality food, an atmosphere, and feeling of those ma and pa stores left for generations to come.
