It’s not everyday bluegrass music and college football come together.

Every typical college football game has a tailgate, but this year Winona State University and the Mid West Music Fest Club took it to a new level by bringing in local bluegrass band Beet Root Stew to play for enthusiastic tailgaters.

Pre-game partiers tapped their feet and bobbed their heads as they grilled hotdogs and listened to Beet Root Stew’s performance.

“We should’ve brought gloves,” said Lisa Mullen to her niece Larissa Olson as they poked their fingers through thorny bushes near a house on Gilmore Avenue in Winona, Minn. The two aren’t spending the day gardening; they are searching for hidden treasures.
