Prescribed Fire as a Resource Tool

Saturday & Sunday, March 19 & 20, 2011

8:30 am - 5:30 pm

Cost of the course:

$30 (for members of the Myrick Hixon EcoPark, Mississippi Valley Conservancy, or The Prairie Enthusiasts).

$35 for non-member

$25 for currently registered College or Technical College student

This two-day course consists of one day of classroom discussion and one day of actual burning (weather permitting). The course will cover the ecology and effects of fire, how weather and topography affect fire behavior, fire behavior principles, the elements of fire management planning, and ignition. All activities will focus on how to safely introduce fire as a tool for management of our local bluffland prairie and oak savanna ecosystems. Participants will also operate basic fire management tools, view the layout and preparation of a fire unit, and conduct several real burns. Outdoor work clothes (pants and long sleeve shirt) with boots and gloves should be brought to the sessions. This course will not prepare students to serve as a burn boss or conduct burns on their own. The course will, however, allow graduates of the course to participate as a volunteer in prescribed fires in the area. These prescribed fires will be conducted by Myrick Hixon EcoPark, Mississippi Valley Conservancy, or The Prairie Enthusiasts.
